Our Tips for Packrafting
A story by Per Sollerman
Packrafting offers the ultimate adventure by combining hiking and paddling. Lundhags friend Per Sollerman shares his newfound passion and teaches us everything we need to know about this exciting activity.
What is Packrafting?
A packraft is not a canoe; it’s a small, inflatable boat that you carry in your backpack. Inflate it when you want to paddle on a lake or river. It’s a mix of kayaking and canoeing, providing a versatile way to explore nature.
Tips for Your First Packrafting Trip
- Start Small: Keep it fun and exciting. Stay near the shore and always wear a life jacket.
- Learn from Experienced Rafters: Just like ice skating, learning from someone experienced is invaluable.
Essential Packrafting Gear
- Packraft: Choose between lightweight or more durable models based on your needs.
- Life Jacket: Always wear one.
- Collapsible Paddle: Easy to carry.
- Spacious Backpack (80-90 liters): For all your gear.
- Waterproof Bags: Keep your essentials dry.
- Inflation Device: A pack bag with a valve or a small electric pump.
- Repair Kit: For emergencies.
- Paddle Leash: Prevent losing your paddle.
- Good Shoes: Crocs for warm weather, sturdy boots for cooler conditions.
- Quick-Drying Clothes: Breathable and fast-drying attire.
- Bug Repellent: Essential for outdoor comfort.
Important Tips Before You Go
- Plan Ahead: Check the weather forecast and plan your route accordingly. Wind direction and strength greatly affect your paddling.
- Follow the Shore: Stick close to the shore for better shelter and less exposure to wind and waves.
Care for Your Gear
After your trip, rinse and dry your packraft and paddle. Store them in a cool, shaded place. Ensure all essential gear is clean, complete, and ready for your next adventure.
Per’s Top Paddling Experience
Per’s favorite trip was to the small islets in Storfjorden, Vansjø. He and his wife, along with their dog, enjoyed tropical warmth, magical sunsets, and their own private island. This trip remains a cherished memory.
Pro Tip
Lighten your load by using the packraft as a bed or pillow when turned upside down. Just bring a sleeping bag and weather protection for an overnight stay.
