Classic hiking is often associated with trail hiking through forests and mountains. There’s something deeply liberating about walking with a backpack and tent through untouched nature. Lowland Hiking – a Step Closer to Nature

Starting with lowland trail hiking, below the tree line, is often a great first step. Lowland trails are common in many nature reserves and are generally closer to civilization – often within reach for a day trip. It’s also easier to cut a trip short if something goes wrong or the weather changes. In other words – the lowlands are more forgiving when you’re learning or trying something new.

Mountain Hiking – the Adventure Beyond the Horizon

Mountain hiking is something truly special. The vast landscapes, the silence, and the feeling of freedom create memories for life. But hiking in the mountains, far from roads and towns, is also a bigger challenge.
It requires planning, preparation, and gear that can handle sudden weather changes and tough conditions. Mobile coverage is often limited, making it harder to call for help if something happens.

Hiking is a simple activity – you are the tool, and nature is your playground.
But the range of clothing and gear is wide, and what works best depends on you. Experiment and find what you like. You don’t need to buy everything at once – the important thing is to get out there.

  • Shoes/boots: durable and supportive.
  • Sleeping bag & pad: reliable and comfortable for a good night’s rest.
  • Tent/shelter: weatherproof and spacious enough.
  • Food & water: enough – plus a little extra.
  • Navigation: map and compass.
  • First aid kit: for minor injuries.
  • Knife/multitool: always useful.

Safety – a Few Tips

  • Right gear: Adapt to your trip and test everything beforehand.
  • Tell someone your route: Let someone know where you’re going, your planned stops, and when you expect to return. Leave notes in trail logs along the way.
  • Check the weather: Follow forecasts and be ready for sudden changes. Respect warnings.
  • Stick to marked trails: Stay on marked routes until you gain more experience.
  • Map & compass: Always carry them and know how to use them – even if you have a GPS.
