In depth: Recycled Down
Our Fulu, Tived, Stockholm and Järpen down jackets are made of 100 % recycled down, emphasizing circularity and sustainability. Using recycled down promotes a circular economy and reduces the fashion industry's environmental impact.
Why Down?
- Warmth-to-Weight Ratio: Superior to synthetic insulation.
- Lightweight: Easier to carry and pack.
- High Comfort: Soft and warm.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
- Higher warmth-to-weight ratio
- Very packable
- High comfort
Cons:
- Loses insulation when wet
- Long drying time
- More expensive than synthetic insulation
What is Fill Power/CUIN?
- Definition: Measures down’s ability to loft and trap heat.
- CUIN: Cubic inches per ounce; higher CUIN means higher loft and less down needed for the same warmth.
- Comparison: Premium goose down can reach 900 CUIN; duck down up to 750-800 CUIN.
- Example: A -5°C sleeping bag with 700-fill-power down is lighter than one with 600-fill-power down, assuming similar fabrics and features.
Recycled Down
- Usage: All down jackets in Fulu, Tived, Stockholm and Järpen concepts use recycled down with CUIN 650+.
- Sources: Collected from China, Vietnam, and Europe, from used products like jackets and duvets.
- Process: Recycled down undergoes the same cleaning and classification as non-recycled down.
