How to dress for Outdoor
Being well-dressed is essential to fully enjoy nature. The key is to stay dry, warm, and protected, which can be achieved by dressing in layers. This allows you to adjust your clothing based on weather changes and activity levels.
The Layer-on-Layer Principle
- Inner Layer: Transports moisture.
- Middle Layer: Retains heat.
- Outer Layer: Protects against weather and wind.
- Extra Layer: Provides additional warmth during breaks.
Layer One - Comfort Closest to the Body
The innermost layer should keep you warm while wicking moisture away. Wool or synthetic fibers are ideal.
- Wool: Merino wool is soft, comfortable, and insulates even when wet. It’s also renewable and biodegradable.
- Synthetic Materials: Quick-drying and efficient at moisture wicking. A mix of wool and synthetic materials combines the benefits of both.
Layer Two - Warming Intermediate Layer
This layer insulates and ventilates, driving moisture away from the inner layer while retaining body heat.
- Materials: Wool or wool blends are excellent. Choose garments with buttons or zippers for easy ventilation.
- Thickness: Opt for a thicker layer in cold weather and a thinner one in warmer conditions.
Layer Three - Outer Shell
The outer layer keeps out moisture, wind, and other elements.
- Waterproof Shells: Ideal for rainy days, keeping you dry while allowing moisture to escape.
- Cotton/Synthetic Blends: Wind-resistant, ventilating, and quick-drying. Waxed versions are great for winter.
Layer Four - Reinforcement Garment
Wear this layer during breaks or when setting up camp. In cold conditions, it should be worn constantly, especially during activities like hunting or fishing.
- Placement: Can be worn inside or outside the shell layer, depending on the environment and temperature.
- Materials: Synthetic fillings with high insulation capacity are recommended.
- Extra Insulation: Include wool insoles for feet, extra mittens for hands, and a hat to prevent heat loss from the head.
By following these layering tips, you can stay comfortable and enjoy your hiking adventures regardless of the weather.
