Discover the Thrill of Nordic Skating

Nordic skating is about more than just getting from one place to another – it’s a way to experience winter up close. Gliding across mirror-like ice, feeling the wind on your face, and hearing the song of the ice is something truly special. With the right technique, equipment, and knowledge of ice conditions, the experience becomes both safe and unforgettable.

Equipment and Preparation

A successful tour begins with good preparation.

  • Check your gear: Make sure your skates, boots, and safety equipment are in good condition. Boots should fit snugly – for new boots, wear them damp for about an hour to shape them to your feet.
  • Shorter blades: Choose blades around 45 cm long for better flexibility and control.

Technique and Training

Skill and confidence on the ice come with practice.

  • Start on artificial ice: Perfect for practicing balance and movement.
  • Use plowed tracks: They offer safe ice and good conditions for improving technique.
  • Learn from experienced skaters: Join knowledgeable skaters and study their movements.
  • Maintain proper posture: Keep your knees slightly bent, push to the side, and use your body weight for drive and stability.

Essential Safety Equipment

Safety is a fundamental part of Nordic skating.

  • Ice Studs: Worn around the neck or on backpack straps – always within easy reach.
  • Ice Spike: Used to check ice thickness along the way.
  • Lifeline: Keep it handy and practice throwing it.
  • Waterproof backpack: A backpack with a crotch strap serves as a flotation aid if you fall through the ice.
  • Companions: Never skate alone – safety increases significantly in a group.

Understanding the Ice

Reading the ice is just as important as skating on it.

  • Core ice: Should be at least 5 cm thick on lakes. Add an extra safety margin on larger areas.
  • Loose ice: Gray ice should be at least 7 cm thick on lakes and 9 cm on larger waters. Be cautious with snow-covered ice, as just 2 cm of snow can reduce ice growth by 90%.

Tours and Community

Skating together makes the experience both safer and more enjoyable.
